There is little history of cowgirls compared to cowboys but The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall Of Fame are trying to rectify this and make people aware of how important cowgirls were in the history of ranch work especially during the war period when they ran the ranches themselves. 
They also worked side by side along their husband as many ranchers could not afford to take on extra labour so they learned to ride horses and the skills they needed to perform the necessary tasks.   

Cowgirls really came into their own when Rodeos were born. They were skilled performers that had excellent riding abilities and entertained people all over the world. A famous cowgirl is Annie Oakley who quickly became a talented cowgirl and a household name.
Modern cowgirls wear jeans, close fitting checked shirts, cowboy boots and hats but there are adaptations and the sexy cowgirl has been born with the sexy cowgirl dresses and skirts.
