Ladies 50s 60s and 70s
Rock and roll originated from a combination of blues, jazz country and gospel music in America in the early 1950s. The 1950s is a fabulous fashion era which saw many fashion trends. The most iconic is the fabulous Rock n Roll Skirts with full underskirts that are designed to flare out with the slightest movement and of course the poodle ankle socks to match. Neck scarfs were also worn along with the Sock hop tops.
The 1960s saw a big change in fashion again from the long rock and roll skirts to the era of the mini dress. The middle of the decade introduced culottes, Gogo boots and box shaped PVC dresses. The mini skirt was also invented in the 1960s by the iconic designer Mary Quant and we also saw the pillbox hat become popular, fashioned by Jackie Kennedy. By the end of the decade fashion had changed greatly again and the late 60s early 70s saw the generation of the Hippy born. Psychedelic prints, highlighter colours and mismatch patterns had a strong influence on ladies fashion along with bell bottom trousers, paisley prints and tie dye fabrics
In 1971 hotpants were a fashion craze for girls and young women. Throughout the 1970s trousers for women were flared at the bottom but were very tight and revealing from the lower thighs up. The fashion industry was also greatly influenced by the epic 1977 film Saturday night fever which saw the introduction of the disco era and saw women wearing wrap around rayon or jersey print dresses.
The pop industry also influenced fashion when Abba were born, an iconic 1970s pop group. Abba are reknowned for the all in one jumpsuit in bright colours with flared bottoms.
